Between La Bresse, Vagney and Cornimont, the Moselotte valley brings together a string of villages that appear in no general guidebook yet form the real fabric of the Hautes-Vosges. Le Syndicat, Rochesson and Sapois are three neighbouring examples, each with its own heritage and pace. Here is what each village concretely has to offer for anyone planning a day out or a stay from La Bresse.
Le Syndicat, the granite town
Le Syndicat calls itself the “cité du granit” (granite town), set at the crossroads of two valleys that serve the Hautes-Vosges resorts. The commune’s former quarries supplied the granite used to pave some Paris streets, an industrial history the village celebrates at its Rond-Point des Granitiers: thirteen pairs of profiles carved into granite slabs, representing local stonecutters.
The Terrae Genesis geology centre is the main site worth a visit, alongside the Sainte-Claire church and its organ at Julienrupt, the Éco Parc Junior (also at Julienrupt) and the Xatis Amet farm and goat dairy. On the distillery side, Lecomte Blaise, in the hamlet of Nol, rounds out the local addresses. For walkers and cyclists, a 10 km permanent trail labelled by the Fédération Française de la Randonnée Pédestre crosses the commune.
The town hall, at 2 bis route du Pont de Cleurie, is open Monday to Friday from 8am to noon and 1:30pm to 5:30pm, and Saturday from 8am to noon (2026 hours).
Rochesson, the Bouchot valley
Rochesson stretches for 7 km along the Bouchot stream, in an east-west valley. The commune highlights two protected natural sites: the cascade de Battion waterfall and the Roche des Ducs, whose viewpoints rank among the most open in the area.
In winter, the village has 10 km of cross-country ski trails as well as a ski tow for learning alpine skiing, a modest but sufficient offer for a family outing without travelling to the larger resorts. The rest of the year, several waymarked hiking and mountain-biking routes run through the commune. The town hall, at 20 Grande Rue, is open Monday to Friday from 8am to noon.
Sapois and Le Haut-du-Tôt, the highest parish in the Vosges
Sapois, at 430 m altitude, includes two upland hamlets: Menaurupt (590 m) and Le Haut-du-Tôt, described by the tourist office as “the highest parish in the Vosges” at 840 m. The hamlet sits 7 km from Vagney and 13 km from Gérardmer, and falls administratively under Sapois or Vagney depending on the street.
At Le Haut-du-Tôt, three sites are worth a walk: the Chèvre-Roche, the cascade de la Pissoire waterfall and the Croix des Hêtres. In winter, the nordic ski area and the Poteau snowfield add an option for cross-country skiing and sledging. Two annual events mark the commune’s calendar: the schlitte-sledging and traditional Vosges trades festival on the first Sunday of August, and the Haut-du-Tôt plant fair on the second Sunday of August, devoted to medicinal and aromatic plants and regional produce. The Sapois town hall, at 44 route de Menaurupt, is open Monday to Friday from 8am to noon.
Thiéfosse, Basse-sur-le-Rupt and Gerbamont, the complementary villages

Planning a stop from La Bresse
These villages suit short stages, best worked into a driving or cycling loop rather than a dedicated excursion. Le Syndicat and Rochesson follow on naturally from each other before reaching Sapois and Le Haut-du-Tôt, climbing gradually towards the neighbouring valley where Le Thillot already sits, another gateway town to the Hautes-Vosges.
For a break after the drive, the lakes around La Bresse remain the simplest option in summer. The campsites around the Vosges lakes offer a practical base for spreading the discovery over several days, and once autumn arrives, the same forests bordering Rochesson and Sapois shelter the deer rut, best heard at dusk while respecting ONF rules.
