Bussang, the last Vosges village before the border with Haute-Saône, combines two assets that regional tourism offices often sum up in one line: an open-air theatre founded in 1895, unique in France for its stage opening onto the forest, and a small family ski resort 3 km from the village centre. Together they make a solid day trip from La Bresse, heading up the Moselle valley.
The Théâtre du Peuple, a utopia founded by Maurice Pottecher
In 1895, Vosges writer Maurice Pottecher founded the Théâtre du Peuple in Bussang with his wife Camille. Their project: a people’s theatre carried by the motto engraved on the stage, “Par l’art, pour l’humanité” (through art, for humanity). The building, listed as a historic monument since 1976, remains one of the few French theatres where a professional company and villagers perform side by side on stage.
Its distinctiveness lies in the architecture itself: the back of the stage opens onto the Vosges forest. When the rear doors swing open, the beech tree planted behind the stage and the woodland canopy of the massif become part of the performance. This dialogue between natural backdrop and stage play sets Bussang apart from any other venue in France.
Since October 2023, director Julie Delille has led the theatre. The venue can hold up to 1,300 spectators per performance during peak season, a capacity kept up partly thanks to village volunteers.
The 2026 season: dates, show and tours
The 2026 summer season runs from 16 July to 13 September. The main show, “Hériter des brumes, la folle histoire du Théâtre du Peuple” (inheriting the mists, the wild story of the Théâtre du Peuple), tells in 6 episodes of about an hour each the story of a troupe trying to recreate, 130 years after its founding, the venue’s original utopia. Performances take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays at 11am, with two extra Fridays (17 July and 28 August), adding up to 6 hours of theatre spread across the day, with the option to split the visit over two days.
Fridays bring the “Éphémères”, multidisciplinary shows scheduled for 24 and 31 July, then 7, 14 and 21 August. The season closes with “Planète Bussang” on Saturday 29 August from 11am, featuring readings, a documentary screening and a concert. The Journées du Matrimoine, on 12 and 13 September at 3pm, extend the season beyond the summer programme.
Outside the season, the theatre can be visited on a guided tour at 10:30am: on Sundays outside school holidays, on Tuesdays during school holidays, and on Fridays during summer season. No booking is required and the outdoor grounds remain freely accessible. Pass Vosges holders get a reduced rate on certain seat categories. Domaine du Larcenaire, Bussang’s family ski resort
3 km from the village, along an easy road toward Hutte Larcenaire, the small Larcenaire ski resort rounds out the picture. The resort has 8 runs (1 fun run, 1 red, 3 blue, 3 green), served by 4 ski lifts and 52 snow cannons. Sheltered from prevailing winds, the terrain is clearly aimed at families and beginners: the resort bills itself as free of snowboarders, with a children’s area equipped with a free rope tow (Piou-Piou club) and a slalom stadium.
On site: a bar with terrace, ski hire, lockers and ESF lessons. Beyond alpine skiing, the resort also offers a sledging run, an ice rink and snowshoe trails, and stays linked to the Ventron-Frère Joseph sector. From La Bresse: getting there and stops to combine
Bussang is reached from La Bresse via the road that follows the Moselle valley, through Cornimont and Le Thillot. This route lets you combine the theatre or ski outing with other stops in the massif: halfway along, the chèvrerie du Brabant and the ferme du Saichy offer tours and tastings of farm produce from Vosges cattle, a taste of local terroir that pairs well with a cultural day in Bussang.
For heritage lovers, the Maquis de la Brayotte, above La Bresse, extends the theatre’s historical theme into a very different chapter of Vosges history: the Resistance in 1944. For views, the Roche du Diable, near Xonrupt-Longemer, and, in autumn, the deer rut in the massif’s state forests offer two more nature outings to pair with a stay centred on La Bresse.
