Season by season

Winter (December to March): the star season

Dry or damp cold depending on prevailing wind. Heavy snow above 900 m (Vologne, Hohneck) from mid-December to early March. In the village (660 m), snow holds 5 to 10 days straight, sometimes 3 weeks.

Gear: waterproof jacket + fleece + thermal base, waterproof gloves, hat, grip boots for the village, ski pants for piste days.

Trap: valley fog often = bright sun on the ridges. Drive up to the Hohneck before cancelling.

Spring (April-May): the magical in-between

Days swing wildly, 2 °C to 20 °C in 48 h. Snow still possible above 1,000 m, great for ski touring on the Hohneck.

Highlights: daffodils in bloom (late April to mid-May, Col de Grosse Pierre), waterfalls swollen by snowmelt (Saut des Cuves, Tendon), low crowds.

Gear: windproof shell, fleece in the pack, waterproof trail shoes.

Summer (June to August): mild, not scorching

20-25 °C daytime, rarely above 30 °C (vs 35-40 °C in the plains). Cool nights: 10-14 °C. Frequent afternoon thunderstorms, short but violent.

Highlights: swimmable lakes, Route des Crêtes open, Bike Park full throttle.

Gear: swimsuit + fleece + rain jacket. Evenings on terraces are cool.

Autumn (September-November): the secret weapon

September often glorious (15-22 °C). October = spectacular autumn colours. November: first snow, greyer.

Go for: hiking photography (golden forests), mushroom foraging (ceps, chanterelles), last lake swims until 20 September.

Local quirks worth knowing

Winter temperature inversion

Cold pools in the valley. -5 °C and fog in the village, +5 °C and sun at the Hohneck. Check the webcams before cancelling.

Usually after 4 PM. On ridge hikes, plan to descend by 3 PM. Short (30-60 min) but violent.

The January thaw

Classic phenomenon: 8-12 °C mid-freezing week. Groomed + snowmaker pistes hold.

The “Hautes Chaumes” wind

Dominant westerly. Gusts to 120 km/h possible in November-December. Route des Crêtes can close.
