Paddling in the Vosges : a different perspective on the massif
Seen from the water, the Vosges forest changes completely. The fir trees come closer, the reflections shift, silence takes over. Kayaking and canoeing around La Bresse offers this rare perspective, away from paths and roads.
The region has several lakes and waterways suited to different levels, from families with young children to experienced sportspeople.
Accessible water bodies
The Lac de Longemer
25 km from La Bresse, the Lac de Longemer (1.8 km long) is the most suitable lake in the region for water sports. Hire operators offer kayaks, pedal boats, windsurfers and canoes. The water is supervised in July-August.
Level required : beginner. Ideal for families and first-time paddlers.
The Lac de Gérardmer
The Lac de Gérardmer is the largest natural lake in the Vosges (115 hectares). The town of Gérardmer offers a full infrastructure with boat, kayak and canoe hire on the waterfront. Very lively in summer, it is the region’s water sports hub.
Level required : beginner to intermediate. Watch out for winds that can pick up quickly.
The Lac de Retournemer
Small and wild, the Lac de Retournemer is protected. Water activities are subject to regulation there. Check current authorisations before any activity.
The Lac de Blanchemer
Closer to the ridges and less busy than Gérardmer, the Lac de Blanchemer offers a more preserved atmosphere. Launching small craft is sometimes tolerated. Ask locally.
Rivers : the Moselotte and the Moselle
The Moselotte
The Moselotte rises in the Vosges and flows through the La Bresse valley before joining the Moselle. Some sections are suitable for white-water kayaking, particularly in spring when the flow is higher.
Level required : intermediate to advanced on the faster sections. Calmer stretches suit supervised beginners.
The Upper Moselle
Further downstream towards Remiremont, the Moselle offers marked kayak and canoe routes over several kilometres. Local clubs organise outings and training sessions.

Most hire operators are concentrated around Gérardmer and Longemer. For La Bresse and the Moselotte valley, direct hire options are more limited : allow a 20-30 minute transfer.

- Life jackets and paddles included
- Safety briefing before departure
Indicative prices :
- Single kayak : €8 to €15/hour

Tips for a successful outing
- Always wear your life jacket, even if you are a strong swimmer
- Check the weather : wind can raise waves on larger lakes
- Choose the morning for calmer water (wind is generally lighter)
- Protect your belongings in waterproof bags
- Bring a change of clothes : capsizing is always possible
- Learn the right-of-way rules on the water before you set off
Combining kayaking and nature
The ideal Vosges paddle outing combines time on the water with a swimming break, a picnic on a wild bank and wildlife watching (grey herons, ducks, occasionally ospreys on Longemer). Take the time to stop, to listen. That is the pace of the water.
