Gérardmer is not just a lake and ski resort: it is also a town with a textile tradition, where several home linen manufacturers have kept shop right in the centre for decades, in some cases since the nineteenth century. This guide lists the town’s landmark shops, their addresses, and ideas for bringing home something more than a generic souvenir. For the rest of the town, see our complete guide to Gérardmer, pearl of the Vosges.
Home linen, Gérardmer’s historic speciality
Gérardmer built its reputation on weaving and making bed, table and bath linen. Several houses founded in the eighteenth or nineteenth century still keep shop here, and sometimes a factory too:
- Le Jacquard Français (founded in 1888): 35 rue Charles de Gaulle and 45 boulevard Kelsch
- Garnier-Thiébaut: 9 place Albert Ferry, with the historic Kichompré factory (11 boulevard de Granges)
- Linvosges: 6 place des Déportés and 21a boulevard Adolphe Garnier
- François Hans - Blanc des Vosges (founded in 1843): 36 rue François Mitterrand and 103 boulevard d’Alsace
- Tradition des Vosges (founded in 1856): 36 rue Charles de Gaulle
- Aude de Balmy (founded in 1776): 3 place de l’Église
- La Corde à Linge (founded in 1998): 302 route d’Épinal and 1A boulevard Kelsch
- Anne de Solène - Dodo Outlet: 20 chemin de Cleurie
- La Ligne verte and Melsin: rue François Mitterrand, with personalised embroidery at the former
Some brands also offer tours of their production sites: Linvosges runs a guided tour of its storage area and sewing workshop, and Le Jacquard Français, at its boulevard Kelsch factory, and Garnier-Thiébaut, at Kichompré, are also among the industrial sites open for visits. A good way to understand the process from spinning to jacquard weaving before buying.
Chocolate and confectionery: sweet treats to take home
Two addresses cover most of the sweet offering in the town centre. The chocolatier-pâtissier Schmitt, at 15 rue François Mitterrand, makes its chocolates and pastries by hand. The Boutique de la Confiserie Géromoise, at 28 rue Charles de Gaulle, sells organic Vosges sweets from the same brand’s workshop on route d’Épinal. At this production site, guided tours of the sweet-making process are offered every day.
To round things out with broader regional produce (munster, blueberry, honey, charcuterie), our guide to Vosges regional produce is focused on La Bresse: in Gérardmer, add to the list the aged Géromé at Cave au Géromé (77 rue Charles de Gaulle) and beers from Brasserie La Géromoise.
Souvenirs and gifts beyond linen and chocolate
For a more classic souvenir, Le Chalet des Peluches, at 1B boulevard Kelsch, describes itself as the town centre’s largest souvenir shop: cuddly toys, decorative items and regional articles. Magalac, avenue de la Ville de Vichy, rounds out the offering with gifts, toys, t-shirts and regional produce.
Practical info: where and when to shop
Gérardmer’s shops are concentrated mainly along two pedestrian streets in the town centre: rue Charles de Gaulle and rue François Mitterrand, a few minutes’ walk from the lake. This is where most of the home linen shops, the chocolatier and the confectionery shop are found.
Opening hours differ from one shop to another, often with a break between midday and 2pm outside the high season. The Office de Tourisme Communautaire Gérardmer Hautes Vosges, 4 place des Déportés (03 29 27 27 27), is open Monday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm from September to June (9am to 7pm in July and August, with Sunday opening until 5pm), with reduced hours in November and March, and remains the reliable reference point for confirming up-to-date shop hours before you go.
If you are staying in La Bresse, allow around 20 minutes by road to reach Gérardmer. That makes it easy to combine a shopping morning with a local calendar event, such as the Festival international du film fantastique in January or the Apéros électro in summer. To choose where to base yourself between the two villages, our La Bresse vs Gérardmer comparison covers the practical differences.
