The e-bike has changed everything in the Vosges: the climbs that put families and occasional riders off become accessible without losing the sporty dimension.
Where to rent in La Bresse
Several village shops offer mid to high-end e-MTBs with helmets, locks and optional GPS. Online booking recommended in July-August and on long weekends.
Brands and models typically available
La Bresse rental shops mainly stock from the leading European e-MTB brands:
Haibike (German brand, pioneer of the segment): ALLTRAIL and ALLMTN models, fitted with Bosch or Yamaha motors. Robust frames, trail geometry, suited to the varied Vosges terrain. 120 to 150 mm suspension travel.
Cube (German brand): Stereo Hybrid range, widespread in Vosges rental shops. Bosch Performance Line CX motor at 85 Nm, Bosch PowerTube 625 Wh battery integrated into the frame. Quality finish, available in several sizes.
Bosch mid-drive motors. Almost all rental e-MTBs are fitted with Bosch central-position (mid-drive) motors, mounted at the bottom bracket. This central positioning guarantees better bike balance compared to hub motors. The Bosch Smart System allows you to adjust assistance across 4 modes (Eco, Tour, Sport, Turbo) from the handlebar or via a smartphone app.
Choosing your e-MTB size
The e-MTB size directly determines riding comfort and safety. Shops generally stock 3 to 4 sizes:
- Size S: for riders 155 to 168 cm
- Size M: for 168 to 178 cm
- Size L: for 178 to 188 cm
- Size XL: for riders over 188 cm
When in doubt between two sizes, rental professionals generally advise going up a size for an e-MTB (the motor weight makes the bike less manoeuvrable on a frame that is too small).
Damage and puncture cover: what to do?
Most shops offer a damage insurance option for 5 to 10 € extra per day. It covers accidental damage up to a defined ceiling (generally 300 to 500 € zero excess). Read the conditions: damage from misuse or theft is generally not covered.
If you puncture. Rental shops routinely provide a repair kit (inner tube or chamber, tyre levers, portable pump) in a bag attached to the frame. For tubeless models (increasingly common), a tubeless plug kit is provided. In the case of an irreparable puncture in the field, shops are reachable by phone and may in some cases send a recovery vehicle (service varies by shop, confirm at rental).
Recommended e-MTB circuits
Electric assist makes the 4 flagship La Bresse circuits accessible to intermediate-level cyclists.
Circuit 1: Lite Hohneck loop (45 km, 1400 m D+, 4 to 5 hours). The grand classic. Muscle power only: for trained cyclists. On an e-MTB: accessible to any rider in reasonable shape. Sport mode is enough for most climbs; save Turbo for the Schlucht ramps and the Col du Bramont exit. A 625 Wh battery is recommended; use Eco mode on rolling sections to finish with reserve.
Circuit 2: Route des Cretes loop (60 km, 1200 m D+, 5 to 6 hours). Mixed road and trail, following the ridge line between France and Germany. Exceptional panoramas on both sides. Mostly in Tour mode, doable in a day with a 750 Wh battery or with careful mode management on a 625 Wh. Progressive elevation, few short sharp ramps.
Circuit 3: 3-lake discovery (25 km, 400 m D+, 2 to 3 hours). The ideal circuit for families and e-MTB beginners. Links the lakes of Longemer, Retournemer and brushes Gérardmer lake via secondary roads and wide paths. Very rolling, modest cumulative elevation. Suitable for children aged 10 to 12 on children’s e-MTBs or in a trailer. Works with any battery.
Circuit 4: Col de la Schlucht return (20 km, 600 m D+, 1.5 to 2 hours). The classic ascent from La Bresse to the Col de la Schlucht (1139 m). Steady climb on a forest road, then descent back by the same route or a trail variant. Perfect for testing assist capabilities on a long climb. With a 500 Wh battery, manage your modes carefully.
E-gravel vs e-MTB: which for the ridge roads?
Shops sometimes offer both types. The difference is significant for Vosges routes:
E-MTB. Front and rear suspension (full suspension) or front only (hardtail). Wide tyres (2.4 to 2.8 inches). Ideal for technical paths, forest tracks, all-terrain. Less efficient on long road sections due to tyre resistance.
E-gravel. Rigid road frame, 40 to 50 mm tyres. Very efficient on road and rolling paths (the ridge roads are mainly tarmacked). Less suited to technical trails and varied-terrain descents.
Recommendation. For the Route des Cretes and the cols, the e-gravel is often more comfortable and more battery-efficient. For tours including forest tracks and singletrack, the e-MTB is the better choice.
Charging at the chalet
The rental e-MTB battery charges via a standard charger provided with the bike (standard 220V plug, same format as a laptop charger). Practical points:
- Full charge time: 4 to 6 hours for a 625 Wh battery from 0%
- Partial charging: Bosch batteries handle partial charges perfectly, no memory effect. Plug in as soon as you return to the chalet to maximise available charge the next morning
- Temperature: do not store the bike in an unheated basement if temperatures drop below zero: lithium-ion batteries lose significant capacity in the cold. A hallway or insulated garage is sufficient
- Some chalets have a heated bike room with power sockets: check at booking if you plan several consecutive ride days
Practical tips
- Keep 20% battery in reserve for the return
- Eco mode on easy stretches, Turbo for steep ramps
- Bring a solid lock and an extra battery for long days
Alternatives
Shops also rent road bikes, XC muscle bikes, tandems, kid trailers and baby seats. For the bike park, you need dedicated downhill MTBs: see our Bike Park guide.
